Chia - Eat the Rainbow

The most adorable way to track the plants you eat and build habits that last

After radically changing our diet to eat a mostly whole food, plant-based diet, my wife and I were looking for a way to track those changes. In particular, we wanted to know how many different plants we were eating each week and what the variety was. We couldn't find anything at the time to track things exactly the way we wanted.

We decided to use her skills as a product manager and mine as a developer to create the mobile app that we were looking for. After working on it for several months we lost steam and put it down for a while. It was about 75% done.

By the time we came back to it AI had gotten good enough to help us finish off the last 25%. I was using standard patterns having built it with Expo, Drizzle, Typescript, and NativeWind. So finishing the last details off became pretty easy.

We aren't the kind of people who often pay for apps and even more rarely pay for subscriptions. So we went with a local-only pattern. Everything is stored on the user's phone. We intentionally don't store their data on our own servers.
